Honduras Tuesday March 4

Tuesday morning after breakfast I took a few pictures around the Kellogg Centro. This is a flowering tree outside the cafeteria.

For our last visit, we went to a deanery wide meeting in Corral Quemado, and met all the priests, deacons and lay leaders of the deanery. After the meeting we went on to Teguz for our last night, and stayed in a nice small hotel there. The next morning, we had breakfast and left for the airport. Here is a picture of Kathy Pennybacker, our guilde, and her dog, Skyler.

Honduras Monday March 3

Monday morning and the trip is getting shorter. Except for the fact that my spine is compressed from the bouncing on the bus, I’m going to hate to leave.

After breakfast, I took a couple of shots of the view looking out from the cafeteria.

Another shot.

20080303-honduras20080303-0003.jpg

The maid for my room was a sweet lady that I became fond of, her name is Luz Maria Araque.

20080303-honduras20080303-0006.jpg

Also, before we left, I got a good shot of Hector, our driver, wearing his Hurley shirt. the man can drive a bus. He went up roads and through spots I wouldn’t have imagined.

20080303-honduras20080303-0007.jpg

We headed out to Danli again to pick up Padre Alejandro. We also had a strange passenger on the bus, not sure of the nationality.
20080303-honduras20080303-0009.jpg

We first visited the suburb of Nueva Esperanza and the Iglesia Episcopal Mano de Dios. the had a very nice templo, made me kind of jealous for Moroceli. Here i a pic from the from door.
20080303-honduras20080303-0023.jpg

We headed to Santa Maria to visit Lay Pastor Alexander Rodriguez Flores and family. The small congregation there is meeting in the front room of their three room house. A large family in small house, no running water.

They cook on a wood pit in the kitchen and use a water purifier supplied by Rotary and the Epsicopal Church.
Rotary and the Episcopal Diocese are working together on Rural Sanitation projects, also supplying a more sanitary outhouse and tips of better sanitation.

From Santa Maria, we went up another fine Honduran highway (NOT) to San Lorenzo. This little community had no electricity or water. Their water came out of a stock pond. But they had what amounted to a convenient store.

Honduras Sunday March 2

Sunday morning in Honduras. Early departure from the Kellogg Centro in Zamorano heading for the city of Danli and services at Cristo Rey Church there. Even though Danli is a fairly large city, the streets of the main drag are all dirt. The church at Danli, Cristo Rey is fairly well established, and they have a parish hall,

20080302-honduras20080302-0002.jpg

20080302-honduras20080302-0007.jpg

and had built a sanctuary, but this templo is being rebuilt now. The previous structure was built so shoddily that they were forced to tear it down and start over.

Only the bell tower was left.
20080302-honduras20080302-0008.jpg

Services today were held in the parish hall. Guitar, keyboard and a trio of ladies accompanied the young male vocalist and the congregation. A young couple sat next to me, and when their year old daughter started fussing, she began to breast feed the child. Completely natural, but can you imagine the uproar if a mother breast fed her child at All Saints’ Lakeland? The roof would blow off! After lunch at the El Torito Restaurante outside Danli, we headed for Moroceli and another Eucharistic service there.

The service at Moroceli was celebrated by the Rev. Carlos Alvarado, assisted by the Rev. Canon Kathleen Pennybacker. 20080302-honduras20080302-0032.jpg This was the first Eucharistic service to be held by the church in Moroceli, more specifically Iglesia Episcopal Todos Les Santos in Moroceli. The service was held in the open porch on the side of the home being rented by Padre Carlos. Roosters were crowing in the back yard during the service, kids and dogs wandering around but that did not take away from the service one little bit.

I took my usual people pictures,
20080302-honduras20080302-0035.jpg

As usual they loved the camera.
20080302-honduras20080302-0038.jpg
This little guy wasn’t too sure however.

Padre Carlos and the whole congregation prayed for the building next door that they hope to buy for the templo. 20080302-honduras20080302-0042.jpg
This is the retired cigar factory building mentioned in a earlier post.

Some more folks.
20080302-honduras20080302-0046.jpg

Maybe not great photography, but neat people. As you can see below, teenage girls are the same the world over.20080302-honduras20080302-0057.jpg

This young lady is going to slay the guys some day.

20080302-honduras20080302-0054.jpg

After visiting for awhile, we loaded up our magic carpet and returned to Zamorano for an early evening. Pretty much churched out, but they were two very moving services. Christianity concentrating on what is important, worshiping God as a family of believers.

Honduras Saturday March 1

I’m not saying much about the meals, because they were all very much alike. Variations on beans and rice, refried beans, etc. However, the meals were tasty and filling. Just a little monotonous.

Off we went for another day. We drove up another excruciatingly bad road to the little town of Tenindero. ( A school bus is not meant for comfort. Little kids don’t much care, but it was a rough ride for us old folks, but we made fun out of it.) We stopped in the town square, which was a large open field. There was the ubiquitous soccer pitch, goals on each end of the square. There was a little store, colorfully painted as were many of the buildings we saw. 20080301-honduras20080301-0005.jpg KP knew the owner of course, so we went in and checked it out. KP said that the woman was very proud of her kitchen, so we all trouped in to see it. Painted in bright colors and very clean, it rated a picture or two. 20080301-honduras20080301-0013.jpgSo did the old gentleman sitting in the kitchen. 20080301-honduras20080301-0014.jpgA tree across the common or square is where the Episcopal mission meets. The church is the people, the templo or actual building does not exist yet.

On up the road to the village of Agua Viva, a town of 100 or so households. We met in the school building. A plot of ground in front of the school has been donated to the mission for a templo. A lady by the of Lourdes Herrera de Urrutai is the deacon for La Ascension in Aqua Viva and the next town up the road, Las Crucitas. She rides a horse on her journeys serving the two little missions. We met the Senior Warden and the other members of the vestry, and I wandered around wasting bits on pictures. 20080301-honduras20080301-0028.jpgSome more beautiful children.20080301-honduras20080301-0030.jpg

Bashful little guy.
20080301-honduras20080301-0034.jpg

Also some beautiful scenery.20080301-honduras20080301-0040.jpg
20080301-honduras20080301-0052.jpg

On to Las Crucitas. This photo through the bus window give you an idea of the roads, and this wasn’t the worst by far.20080301-honduras20080301-0020.jpg

The mission there is named Iglesia Episcopal La Transfiguration. As said before, Lourdes is the deacon over this mission as well. About 200 households make up Las Crucitas. 20080301-honduras20080301-0063.jpg

A dusty street in Las Crucitas.20080301-honduras20080301-0064.jpg

Very difficult to get to from the outside. Interestingly, in the land of indians with black hair, there were two little boys with blonde hair. 20080301-honduras20080301-0080.jpg I’m sure there is a reasonable explanation, but we didn’t look into it.

They are building a structure in Las Crucitas to house work teams and other groups that come up there to stay overnight. The land next to the home where the church is meeting now is where they plan t\o build the templo. We prayed in a circle for the establishment of the church and the building of the templo.

A few more kids.20080301-honduras20080301-0067.jpg

Again.20080301-honduras20080301-0083.jpg

From Las Crucitas we took the bumpy ride back down to the main road, CA6 which is the Pan-American Highway, and on to Yuscaran, which is where KP lives.

Some scenery.20080301-honduras20080301-0092.jpg

Esmarelda, her housekeeper was preparing an early dinner for us.

There were two other missionary couples there, from SAMS, South American Missionary Society. We ate and listened to war stories for a while, then Bob Springthorpe and I walked on down to the town, and hung around the square.

We had a Eucharistic Service at Iglesia Episcopal La Presentacion there is Yuscaran. It is the home church for the Deanery and Fr. Dagoberto Chacon, the Dean. Then back to Zamarano and evening compline. Another good day in the neighborhood.
