Waiting for Godot, I mean Mel

10 AM Honduras time. Zelaya is supposed to arrive about 11 AM, and the administration promises his arrest. Two heads of state are traveling with him, plus apparently a horde of media. Vultures in other words. Several thousand supporters are at the airport to await Mel. First pray for no blood shed. After that I am hoping for his arrest and the Honduras government snubbing their nose at the rest of the Central American community, as well as our leader, The One. I’l update more later.

Had an interesting day. Met up with John Fenley, head driller for the Texas Water Mission. John is an interesting character, a fine guy. We went into Tegucigalpa to check on submersible pumps and tanks for the well to be drilled in Moroceli. Met with a fellow at Aquatech, who is going to send me approximate pricing on a soups to nuts installation for the well. (For those less literary, soup to nuts means beginning to completion.) Looks like a class operation.

On the way to Teguz, we had to stop as usual at the places where the road washed away last August in the flooding.

This is the hotel that washed down the hill, or rather what’s left of it.

They are tearing out part of the mountain to widen what is left of the road. Wonder what they are going to do when that washes out?

From Teguz, we returned to Zamorano picked up my car and headed for Danli. On the way we stopped at Moroceli so John could see the location for drilling later this month. When we arrived, the guys were hard at work installing the electrical wiring in the building. Really good to see the work starting on the renovations.

We then went on to Danli where I met Louis Espinal, a fellow Rotarian who is quite influential in Danli, his wife being a congress woman in the National Assembly. Louis will be very helpful here.

Changing the subject slightly, I am in the small towns here day and night, and you always see the kids running around free as a bird, unattended, unsupervised. We can’t let our kids out of our sight for fear of something horrible happening to them. The Hondurans don’t have the fear. Not being very bright, I can only assume that the difference is our sick culture. A topic for another forum, or blog.

Some scenery

Three photos which show how pretty the Honduras countryside is, particularly during the rainy season.

June 27-28, 2009

Flew into Tegucigalpa yesterday amid reports of dissension between the leftist president Zayala and the other branches of government over a poll on constitutional change which was scheduled for Sunday, 6/28. Everything looked pretty normal except for an increased presence of military personnel. Got out of town uneventfully, stopped at the Kellogg Centro to drop off my bags, and went to Yuscaran to meet Dagoberto+ and followed him to Zarzal for their 15th anniversary Eucharist. As usual, went off on a path which passed for a road. After a few kilometers, Dago+ had me park the car because the rest of the road was too rough for the Honda CR-V. And he was right. It was also too rough for his Nissan pickup ruck. We got stuck in the mud, and couldn’t make it up one hill. We walked in from there, not too far. After the service, we walked back to the truck, and Dago+ took me to my car, and I returned to Zamorano, ate and crashed.

Woke up Sunday morning to news that the military had arrested the President and removed him to Costa Rico. Also woke up to a bat hanging on the wall outside my dor, and another on one of the rafters. I called the bat police (the receptionist) and he fearlessly removed them.

My meeting in Moroceli was canceled because the Bishop didn’t want anyone on the roads, and the Zamorano School, containing the Kellogg Centro, went into lockdown mode, with only one entry point, and sent the staff home early. So instead of a productive day, I just hung out.
