Days in Alaska And Victoria Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ketchikan was the last stop we made in Southeast Alaska. \u00c2\u00a0Approximately 14,000 people live in Ketchikan and the surrounding countryside. \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ketchikan,_Alaska\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ketchikan,_Alaska<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 I really can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t say a whole lot positive about Ketchikan, although I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure it is a nice place. \u00c2\u00a0A prime cruise ship port, it is very commercial. \u00c2\u00a0The best attraction from our standpoint was the Totem Heritage Center, which preserved and displayed old totems from around Ketchikan and the surrounding areas.. \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.city.ketchikan.ak.us\/departments\/museums\/totem.html\">https:\/\/www.city.ketchikan.ak.us\/departments\/museums\/totem.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.experienceketchikan.com\/totem-heritage-center.html\">http:\/\/www.experienceketchikan.com\/totem-heritage-center.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">The principal purposes and reasons for Totem Poles in the culture of the Northwest Indians were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"square\">\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Potlatch Pole &#8211; to symbolize the generosity of the person who sponsored the Potlatch ceremony<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Legend Pole &#8211; To record a supernatural encounter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Memorial Pole &#8211; To commemorate the life of an important person\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Burial Pole &#8211; totem poles were used as grave markers, grave posts\u00c2\u00a0 or mortuary totem poles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Heraldic Pole &#8211; Recording the history of clans or families<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Portal or Entryway pole &#8211; through which a person enters the house, identifying the owner and family of the house<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Ridicule pole, also called shame pole\u00c2\u00a0 &#8211; symbolic reminders of debts, quarrels, murders, and other objectionable occurrences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: #d3492f;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Helvetica;\">Indoor House Pole &#8211; supported the roof and bore emblems of the clan<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 12px; font-family: Columbia. \u00c2\u00a0Victoria is the capital city of the province of British Columbia, and is one of the prettiest cities we have visited. \u00c2\u00a0Some background if you are interested. Butchart Gardens, and rightfully so. \u00c2\u00a0A beautiful place, and not to be missed if you are in the vicinity. \u00c2\u00a0<a there was a street fair going on around the pretty little harbor.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Parliament building across a corner of the harbor.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\"
